![]() ![]() I joined 80 of my colleagues in writing to IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig to urge the IRS to address and eliminate the massive backlog in mailed tax returns, and to assist Taxpayer Advocacy Services in the hiring and training of new taxpayer advocates. ![]() Taxpayers should not have to wait months for refunds or face interminable hold times when trying to get basic information. Increased funding would also help the functionality of the agency by increasing its ability to process returns in a more timely and efficient manner. Estimates suggest that increasing the IRS's budget by $100 billion over the next 10 years will bring in $1.4 trillion in revenue that would otherwise go uncollected, which would pay for the investment in enforcement 14 times over. Increasing the IRS's budget would allow more audits of high-income individuals and more than pay for itself by allowing the IRS to effectively collect unpaid taxes. The IRS needs increased resources to ensure compliance with our voluntary tax system and prevent tax fraud. The IRS currently employs fewer auditors than at any time since the 1950s, even as the tax code has become more complex, and the number of returns filed by individuals and businesses has grown. Congress has consistently skirted its responsibility to give this crucial agency the resources it needs to function effectively and efficiently. The Internal Revenue Service will face enormous challenges during this year's tax filing season. ![]()
